Social standing can be determined by any factor.

A person in politics will say that a man outside of politics is of lower social status or class even if that man has the same amount of wealth, money, and ability to provide.

There are places in this world where a black man is considered of lower social statusor class then a white man.

You can be of lower social status or class because you are a foreigner or immigrant.

You can be of lower status or class because your grandfather was a criminal.

You can be of lower social status or class if you are in the entertainment industry. Never mind you only make documentaries about elephants!

You can be of lower social status or class because you have different customs. Even if that difference is not that great. Say from tribe to tribe.

You can have lower social status or class because your in a wheel chair or lack an arm.

You can be of lower status or class because you are a working man compared to those who dont feel any need to work.

Perhaps you are a farmer and that fact alone makes you of lower social status or class to the city people never mind that you are richer, and have a bigger house, and add to that you’re a great Muslim!

Social standing is created by humans and can be defined by any one of these listed or a combination of these. There are so many more. Absolutely anything you can think of can raise or lower it. Just look around you. Social status or class is something created by man and therefore flawed.

As-Salamu `Alaikum,

I always saw social status as part of animalist tendencies -- the alpha dog and the beta dog, or the queen bee type thing.

We have that, but as an added bonus, people group together with similar kind, then ridicule those who are different.

It's a slippery subject similar to humility: The humble person says, "Ah, I am humble and you are not, therefore I am better than you".
